Redistribution of YOUR life doesn’t work?

.

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college.  Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth..

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed.  Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs.

The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father..  He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew.  She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Audrey doing?”

She replied, “Audrey is barely getting by.  All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA.  She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast.  She’s always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.”

Her wise father asked his daughter, “Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0.  That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution ofGPA.”

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father’s suggestion, angrily fired back, “That’s a crazy idea, how would that be fair!  I’ve worked really hard for my grades!  I’ve invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work!  Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree.  She played while I worked my tail off!”

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, “Welcome to the conservative side of the fence.”

    K2,

I find it interesting that the concept is different when applied to earning money. It would be interesting to see a transcript of each interview in its entirety, I would like to know how each of the students explained how redistributing GPA is different than redistributing money. Both are redistributing from the successful to the not-so-successful.

Socialists policies are great when somebody else is having the fruits of their hard earned success redistributed. A perfect example is Hollywood, the vast majority scream about needing to do more to help the poor, yet few actually do, and I am still waiting to see any from the left cut an extra check to the treasury on Tax (theft) day because they did not pay enough.

    @DJ:
It really is amazing how people view redistributing anything to be fair – whether it be your paycheck, your pets, your GPA, or your land it really doesn’t make sense.

As for these aspiring students… what do they expect to do when they graduate? I am sure that many of them expect to make money and lots of it. Are they really putting in 4-10 years of hard work just to give the fruit of their labor to their neighbor?

    Seriously?

and as we heard in the video, many of them said that they NEED the 4.0 GPA. What do they need more… the MONEY they earned to go buy food, clothes, and transportation… or the NUMBER that is a general valuation of their work? It seems to me they should be much more willing to give up their GPA over their money – but they don’t.

    Why?

It is easy to see how high school and college kids can fall for the socialist promises . Also the uneducated poor . What is puzzling is how wealthy people support Obama . In an article in National Review they analyze Obama’s strategy of going after the ‘ upper middle class ‘ . Those in the $ 100,000 to $ 250,000 per year range . Obama has to get them back in 2012 to win . Obama’s minions are always careful to speak of raising the taxes of those rich people just above that range .

It is always divide and conquer the taxpayers . Get people addicted to the Government heroin . Tell people that it will be paid for by someone else . Then when taxes on the rich don’t pay the bills, the middle class will more readily accept higher taxes on themselves rather than give up the benefits they receive .

"We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth... For my part, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst; and to provide for it." - Patrick Henry

"Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it." - William Penn

"Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country" - Hermann Goering

"I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do this I keep on doing." - Romans 7:18-19

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain
